In a nutshell

Studying A Level English Literature allows plenty of scope for discussion and the development of your own ideas. It provides learners with an introduction to the discipline of advanced literary studies and presents opportunities for reading widely and for making creative and informed responses to each of the major literary genres of poetry, prose and drama.

What will I be doing?

You’ll study two units at AS and three units at A Level. Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to read widely and independently whilst being taught how to analyse, evaluate and compare a range of literary texts from different cultural contexts.

At AS, you’ll study Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (prose), Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere’s Fan (drama), and a collection of poetry from Philip Larkin – The Whitsun Weddings, and Carol Ann Duffy – Mean Time. At A Level, you’ll study Shakespeare's Hamlet (drama), a collection of poems by Christina Rosetti and will produce a coursework folder of 2,500-3,500 words, following study of John Fowles’ The Collector, and a text chosen by you.

You’ll be assessed by regular homework, class work test marks and mock examination grades, which will enable you to measure your progress. At AS Level, you’ll be formally assessed by two summer examinations and, at A Level, by coursework and two summer examinations. Upon completion, you’ll achieve:

  • AS Level English Literature
  • A Level English Literature

What is expected of me?

To enrol on this course you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C to include Maths/Maths ,Numeracy and English Language or Literature.

What comes next?

A Level English Literature is a traditional transferable academic subject held in high regard by Russell Group Universities. Many careers are open to English students. However, the most obvious professions are law, journalism, teaching, administration, civil service, the media and creative industries.

Additional information

You will have the opportunity to participate in enrichment and supercurricular activities to support your academic progress for which you will be asked to make a small financial contribution. You will be expected to have access to recommended tests specific to your course.
