Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English/Welsh 1st Language and Maths/Numeracy.

A grade B in Science is desirable to study AS Psychology. Alternative subject achievements might be considered if you do not have a grade B. Please talk to one of our advisors.

In a nutshell

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and is concerned with helping us understand the thoughts and behaviours of individuals. The course is diverse, interesting and challenging, covering many areas within psychology. The course is divided into four units, two at AS and two at A2.

What will I be doing?

The first year of study (AS Level) covers the following areas:

AS content (40% of A level): In the first year of study, students will cover the main approaches in Psychology (psychodynamic, behaviourist, cognitive, biological and positive), along with theories such as the social learning theory of aggression and Freud’s theory of personality. Students will study a variety of therapies such as psychosurgery and dream analysis, as well as looking at contemporary debates and research methods. Assessment: Two written exams sat in May.

The second year of study - A2 content (60% of A level):

During the second year, students will consider the implications of psychology in the real world, specifically how psychology has helped us understand different types of behaviours, such as; criminal behaviour, schizophrenia, addictive behaviour, bullying behaviours and stress. You will also study the different controversies within psychology as well as applied research methods. Assessment: Two written exams sat in May/June.

Upon completion of this course, you’ll gain:

  • AS Level Psychology
  • A Level Psychology

What is expected of me?

To enter the course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*- C or above, including a minimum of C grades in English/Welsh First Language and Maths/Maths Numeracy.

What comes next?

Psychology is useful for a range of university courses and careers which involve working with people, for example; teaching, nursing, social work and the police force. Many of our students go on to study psychology at degree level, leading to careers in areas such as forensic psychology, sports psychology, clinical psychology and educational psychology.
